UST seeks to keep immaculate record in Shakey’s volleyball

Unbeaten University of Santo Tomas will take on Far Eastern University in the second round of the 2024 Shakey’s Super League Collegiate Pre-Season Championship at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum on Friday.

UST defeated Ateneo de Manila, 25-11, 25-20, 25-17, on Sunday to extend its winning run after a 4-0 record in the first round.

“We have to play well to win. We are not new to each other; we have played many games all year. Just stick to the system and the rest will follow,” UST head coach Kungfu Reyes said Thursday.

Wing spikers Angeline Poyos and Jonna Perdido, opposite hitters Regina Grace Jurado and Margaret Altea, and setter Cassie Carballo will banner the Tigresses, who were last season’s runners-up.

FEU, on the other hand, will rely on playmaker Christine Ubaldo, wing spikers Chenie Tagaod and Gerzel Petallo, and middle blockers Jean Asis and Clarisse Loresco.

The Golden Tigresses will face the Lady Tamaraws at 2 p.m. in Pool F.

Playing at 5 p.m. in Pool E are defending champion National University
and College of Saint Benilde.

The Lady Bulldogs will bank on opposite hitter Alyssa Solomon and wing spikers Mhicaela Belen and Evangeline Alinsug as they try to recover from their 30-32, 25-14, 22-25, 21-25 loss to De La Salle University on Sunday.

It was NU’s first defeat in the SSL since 2022, ending a 28-game streak.

The Lady Blazers also hope to bounce back after losing to the University of the East Lady Warriors, 19-25, 18-25, 23-25, last Sunday.
