Tien Ci-Chiew Sien Lose In Malaysia Super 100 Semi-finals

KUALA LUMPUR, National mixed doubles pair Wong Tien Ci-Lim Chiew Sien were upset by Japan’s Yuichi Shimogami-Sayaka Hobara in the semi-finals of the 2024 Malaysia Super 100 badminton tournament here today.

The second-seeded Malaysians lost 19-21, 14-21 in 45 minutes at Stadium Juara to the Japanese, who are seeded third and ranked 64 in the world.

Speaking to reporters after the match, Tien Ci said their performance had improved although they lacked consistency.

‘We were determined to win but lost confidence after making many mistakes. We were inconsistent and lacked mental strength,’ he added.

‘I would give ourselves 6 or 7 points out of 10 in this tournament. After this, we are going to compete in Indonesia and Japan,’ he added.

Chiew Sien, whose partnership with Tien Ci is ranked world number 57, said it was not too taxing for them to compete in back-to-back tournaments.

Shimogami-Hobara will meet Ye Hong Wei-Nicole Gonzales Chan of Taiwan in the final tomorrow.

Meanwhile, in an unexpected incident,
a serious injury believed to be on Ng Qi Xuan’s right knee has forced her to withdraw with her partner Yap Rui Chen, from the women’s doubles in the semi-finals.

The country’s professional pair were leading 22-20 and 20-18 against national representatives Go Pei Kee and Teoh Mei Xing, when the unfortunate incident occurred.

Qi Xuan fell while trying to counter an opponent’s attack with a ‘smash’ shot before being carried out of the court.

Pei Kee and Mei Xing, who are seeded fourth in the tournament, expressed their sympathy for Qi Xuan’s fate and wished her a speedy recovery from the injury.

Pei Kee-Mei Xing will next face off with Taiwanese pair Nicole Gonzales Chan-Yang Chu Yun in the final tomorrow.

Meanwhile, the men’s doubles final will see the national duo Low Hang Yee-Ng Eng Cheong battling the United States pair Chen Zhi Yi-Presley Smith.

Hang Yee-Eng Cheong advanced to the final after defeating the Taiwanese pair, Wu Hsuan Yi-Ye Hong Wei 21-19, 21-17 in the semi-finals.
