Taxis in Davao City to adopt ‘cashless’ payment

A new fleet of taxis here will soon accept digital payments beginning Dec. 1.

Pierre Ryan Tan, the operations manager of the Mabuhay Taxi, said an initial 50 units of the new black taxi will be provided with QR PH or the Philippines’ QR code standard, a global mode for secured electronic payments.

‘This is our innovation. This will also be rolled out to our blue taxi,’ Tan said in an interview on Thursday.

He said the upgrade offers the passenger added security and convenience since they do not have to type the recipient’s account information and are assured that the correct account number is used for the transaction.

Despite the new feature, he said the flag-down rate of their new units will remain the same at PHP40.

Meanwhile, Nonito Llanos III, director of the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board in Davao Region (LTFRB-11), said the Mabuhay Taxi, being one of the pioneering taxi operators here, is the only one in the country allowed by the LTFRB to have black-colored taxis.

‘Since we
started the black taxi, there might be operators who also want to apply and we cannot stop them. If there are openings of slots of taxis, we can give them,’ Llanos said in an interview Thursday.
