SUKMA Diving: Gold Hat-trick Winner Dayang Sets Sights On New Family Car

KUCHING, Dayang Nursharzyra Awang Nasaruddin completed her gold medal hat-trick at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), winning the women’s 3m springboard synchronised event title with Nur Eilisha Rania Muhammad Abrar Raj, today.

The duo, representing the hosts, amassed a total of 212.58 points after five dives at the Pandelela Rinong Aquatic Centre.

Celeste Lee Qin and Ong Jia Le from the Federal Territories (205.44 points) and Perak’s Cecelia Olivia Christopher Leoneil and Siti Nurul Jannah Malik (190.35 points) took home the silver and bronze medals, respectively.

Dayang Nursharzyra, who also secured gold in the mixed 3m springboard synchronised with her brother Awang Sharzan Nasrin, and the women’s 1m springboard events, plans to use part of her prize money to purchase
a new family car.

‘My brother is currently sharing my father’s car to attend classes. He will be here with my parents, while I am with the national team programme in Bukit Jalil. So, I think it would be better if we had a new car for the family to use here in Kuching.

‘I would love to have a Proton X70, but I’m not sure if the prize money will be enough,’ she said, hoping the divers wouldn’t need to share the RM15,000 awarded for the synchronised event.

Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg recently announced a RM15,000 incentive for gold medalists, with silver and bronze medalists receiving RM5,000 and RM3,000, respectively.

The 17-year-old diver has a chance to earn an additional RM15,000 if she wins the women’s 3m springboard title tomorrow, while her eldest brother, Awang Mohammad Sharszan, who had to give up diving due to a chlorine allergy, won a silver in lawn bowls.

Yesterday, Awang Sharzan Nasrin, who is pursuing a Sports Science diploma, missed a medal finish in men’s 3m springboard sy
nchronised medal with Soh Tze Kang after a costly error in their final dive.

Meanwhile, Sarawak swept today’s diving events, when Enrique Maccartney Harold (409.10) and Elvis Priestley Clement (390.25) clinched gold and silver in the men’s platform event.

Muhammad Anilrian Normatr Abdullah of Sabah finished third with 330.40 points.
