STRONG EARTHQUAKE HITS PAPUA NEW GUINEA

KUALA LUMPUR, A strong earthquake measuring 6.4 on the Richter scale was detected in New Britain Region, Papua New Guinea at 4.56 this morning.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) said that the epicentre of the earthquake was located at 5.8 degrees south and 151 degrees east with a depth of 68 kilometres (km) which is 30 km southeast of New Britain Island, Papua New Guinea.

‘There is no tsunami threat to Malaysia,’ it said in a statement.
