SMK Sri Kiambang Develops Innovative Fertiliser From Waste Materials

KOTA BHARU, Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Sri Kiambang in Pasir Mas has developed an innovative organic fertiliser using just four waste materials – vegetable scraps, sugarcane bagasse, brown sugar and yeast.

Teacher Nik Azira Raja Hassan said the fertiliser, named ‘Kiambang Super Organik,’ was created by six Form 5 Science students as part of their Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) curriculum.

‘This fertiliser not only enhances plant growth but also improves livestock health, reduces odours in animal pens and supports plant photosynthesis, thereby enriching the soil.

‘The production process is efficient, taking around three months. Waste vegetables and sugarcane bagasse are dried and then fermented with brown sugar and yeast,’ she told Bernama during the STEM Pitching Fiesta at Dewan Yayasan Islam Kelantan here today.

Nik Azira highlighted the importance of the correct water-to-material ratio to ensure high-quality fertiliser.

The idea for this project emerged from the school’
s effort to reduce the costs on fertiliser for vocational students in the agricultural field.

Previously, the school spent around RM500 on fertiliser for three planting phases, including sweet corn, mustard, eggplant and okra.

‘The new fertiliser has proven successful and is now sold at the school for RM10 per 500 millilitres.

‘We are open to collaborations with any parties or companies interested in helping us expand and market this product more widely,’ she added.
