Sepak Takraw: Muhammad Zarif Determined To Prove Himself At King’s Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, National sepak takraw player Muhammad Zarif Marican Ibrahim Marican is determined to prove himself as he takes on a crucial role as the ‘tekong’ (server) at the King’s Cup Sepak Takraw World Championship this September.

The 23-year-old is aware of the significant responsibility he must shoulder in the absence of the country’s main tekong, Muhammad Syahir Rosdi, who is sidelined due to a recent right hamstring injury.

“InshaAllah, I believe and will prove that anyone who is fielded will give their best. I feel ready to take on this responsibility in Syahir’s place,” he told the media following a press conference by the Sepaktakraw Association of Malaysia (PSM) today.

Muhammad Zarif admitted to feeling the pressure of replacing a more senior and experienced player but is determined to deliver a strong performance in the prestigious tournament, which runs from Sept 8-20.

“So far, our preparations are adequate; we have undertaken various trainings, including fitness and psychological sessions w
ith the help of the National Sports Institute (ISN). The training camp in Ratchaburi has also helped our preparation,” he said.

Malaysia has been placed in Group C for the team event alongside China and Laos, and will face India, China, Singapore, and Brunei in the regu event.
