Senior citizen with fractured hip wades through chest-high floodwaters

PASIR MAS, Dec 21 — A senior citizen had to wade through chest-high floodwaters for almost 500 metres to get to a relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Gual Tinggi after her home in Kampung Alor Pasir, here, was submerged in water reaching almost 0.8 metres.

Recounting the moment, Che Som Isa, 67, who also suffered a hip fracture almost 10 years ago due to a road accident, said she did not expect the water to rise so fast .

“I had to wade through the floodwaters last Saturday evening because my family and I did not have boat or facilities to navigate the floods. I had to get out of my house to avoid untoward incidents from happening.

“When the water started to rise to chest level, I decided to drag my two grandchildren and son-in-law to the nearby relief centre,” she told Bernama when met at SK Gual Tinggi, Rantau Panjang here today.

Elaborating further, the mother of six children aged between 32 and 48 said as a result of the accident, the fractured femur had to be installed with a metal rod that when wading through the floodwaters, the pain was overwhelming.

“After the harrowing experience, my thighs began to feel sore and numb for a long time.

“I am thankful that as soon as I arrived at the relief centre, the health staff immediately helped me and gave me further treatment to reduce the pain,” said Che Som who was involved in a motorcycle accident while on her way home from work.

She said that this was not the first time she had to evacuate to avoid floods because since 2014 her house was often flooded, especially during the monsoon season.
