Sarawakians Urged To Support SUKMA Events In Sibu


SIBU, Sarawakians living in the state’s central areas have been urged to show up and support the athletes competing in the 2024 Malaysian Games (SUKMA) in Sibu from Aug 17 to 24, Sarawak Sports Council central region officer Mike Changgan said.

He added that entry to competition venues were free and that there were three sports being contested in Sibu, football, volleyball and badminton.

‘The second group match for football will be held tomorrow at Tun Zaidi Stadium and Azman Hashim Stadium, while volleyball matches will be from Aug 17 to 24 at the Taman Rejang Volleyball Stadium here,’ he told reporters today.

“The Sarawak men’s team will play their opening Group A match against Pahang at 8 am, Aug 17. Let’s all come and support the Bumi Kenyalang team,’ he added.

He also said that the mixed badminton team event will be held on Aug 17 to 18 at the Sibu Indoor Stadium, with the first match taking place at 10 am, Aug 17.

In conjunction with 2024 SUKMA in Sarawak from Aug 17 to 24, Bernama is introducing a special website sukma.bernama.com for news related to current developments of state contingents and their achievements, along with interesting stories of athletes in the biennial Games.

The dual-language website will also display the latest results and galleries of photos and videos, along with the medal standings and facts about SUKMA.

A total of 37 sports involving 488 events – 236 men’s, 217 women’s and 35 mixed events – are being contested in the 21st edition of SUKMA, which takes place in nine divisions, Kuching, Samarahan, Serian, Sri Aman, Betong, Sibu, Mukah, Bintulu and Miri.

SUKMA was introduced in 1986 and Sarawak has hosted the Games twice, in 1990 and 2016.
