Rabbit breeder loses RM30,000 due to Muar floods

MUAR, March 7 (Bernama) — A rabbit breeder sustained losses of around RM30,000 after his residence and rabbit cages in Kampung Liang Batu, Lenga here were flooded.

Shahrizan Mansor, 41, was thankful that he managed to evacuate over 200 of his rabbits and eight exotic animals to a friend’s house in Felda Lenga here using a three-ton lorry. His lossess include frozen products, electrical appliances and rabbit barn, all of which were destroyed by floodwaters.

Even his petting zoo, build two years ago, which housed his exotic animals such as various chicken breeds like Brahma, Silkie USA, Poland Silver, Poland Chamois, as well as Baji birds, were lost.

“It didn’t stop raining last Wednesday so on Thursday morning, I made the decision to move all my animals to higher ground with the help of eight of my friends as floods had hit Labis in Segamat.

“On Friday morning, floodwaters rose to the knees very swiftly as my area was around 800 metres from Sungai Liang Batu. Even now, my neighbours tell me that everything is still flooded to a depth of two metres,” he said when met at the relief centre in Pagoh Sports Complex here today.

Shahrizan said the rabbits he has brred in the last four years include the Holland Lop, Mix Teddy Bear, New Zealand White, Chinchilla, Angora, Harlequin, Lionhead and Tri-Color Mini Rex, with some fetching up to several thousand per animal.

“This is the second time my place has been hit by floods, the first in January last year, but this time it’s worse. I’m glad I could save all my rabbits, if I was slower, I could have lost them all,” he said.

The father of two expressed sadness over the loss of his other items, but accepted what had happened and was glad that his family, especially his wife, who is eight months’ pregnant, were safe.

Meanwhile, the Muar Public Works Department posted a notice on Facebook stating that nine roads in the district were closed to all traffic due to flooding as of noon today.

The closure affects Jalan Muar-Labis near the Speedmart supermarket, Lenga; Jalan Muar-Labis near Kampung Jawa; Jalan Muar-Labis near Jambatan Sungai Tui; Jalan Muar-Labis near Galeri Bukit Kepong; and Jalan Durian Chondong near Jambatan Sungai Muar.

“Jalan Tekam Pogoh near Kebun Kelapa Sawit; Jalan Kampung Liang Batu near Masjid Kampung Liang Batu; Jalan Renchong-Gombang near Sungai Menchil; and Jalan Renchong-Gombang near Sungai Massam are also closed,” according to the notice.
