Police refer man behind murder of street cleaner to prosecution

Police referred a man to the prosecution Wednesday on charges of stabbing a street cleaner to death in central Seoul last week.

The man, surnamed Lee, is accused of killing the woman in her 60s, who was working at the time, by stabbing her multiple times at an underpass near the Sungnyemun gate Friday.

Police arrested the suspect near Seoul Station about four hours later.

Lee reportedly told police he had committed the crime as he thought the victim had slighted him. They had known each other since May last year, police said.

The suspect, believed to be unemployed, resided at an inn near Seoul Station and sometimes slept on the streets, officials added.

On Sunday, the district court issued an arrest warrant for him, citing his risk of flight.
