PH U-16 girls reach Norway football semifinals

DUMAGUETE CITY: The Under-16 girls’ football team of the Leyte Association of Organized Sports Football Club (Laos FC) missed the finals but won hearts in the ongoing Norway Cup in Oslo.

Norway team Alta IF dashed the Filipino girls’ finals hope on Aug. 1 with a thrilling 2-1 win, decided by a shootout.

Despite the elimination, Philippine Ambassador to Norway Enrico Fos, who was present at every game, said ‘they showed the Filipino heart and resilience despite the odds.’

A news release from the Football Kings United (FKU) club here praised the club team for the ‘talent and determination to succeed at the highest level of youth football.’

The Norway Cup has 34 participating nations and is among the largest youth football tournaments in the world.

Four of the Laos FC U-16 girls are from Negros Oriental.

They are FKU’s Zara Gabriella Danieles and Kelsy Skye Anub of Dumaguete City, and Carabelle FC’s Erika Rose Jamio and Charmen Nacion of Guihulngan City.

Laos FC’s boys’ U-19 team made it to the round of 1
6 while the boys’ U-16 squad reached the quarterfinals.

‘We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to our families for their unwavering support throughout this campaign,’ Laos FC posted on Facebook.
