Penang To Discuss Assistance For Flood Victims

TASEK GELUGOR, A meeting will soon be held by the Penang Government to determine the type of assistance to be provided to flood victims in the state.

State Social Development, Welfare and Non-Islamic Affairs Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim said she would discuss the matter with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow.

‘Today, I am visiting the flood victims at the relief centre (PPS) in Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Lahar Yooi to identify the type of assistance they need.

‘I will be discussing with the Chief Minister the best way to help the victims and the meeting will be held soon,’ she told reporters after visiting the PPS at SK Lahar Yooi, here today.

As of 7.30 pm today, a total of 590 flood victims have been evacuated to eight PPS across the state due to floods resulting from continuous rainfall three days ago.

Lim said that flood victims have not yet been allowed to return home due to safety concerns, as the floodwaters have not fully receded.

She said that checks by the security forces on duty found that the v
ictims’ homes were still submerged due to the recent heavy rain and the high tide phenomenon.

‘I spoke to the victims at the relief centre, and they expressed their gratitude for the assistance provided, saying it is sufficient. We pray for the situation to improve soon so they can return home,’ Lim said.
