NHCP head urges DepEd to beef up history subjects in school

DUMAGUETE CITY: The chairperson of the National Historical Commission of the Philippines (NHCP) is urging the Department of Education (DepEd) to promote historical education in schools.

Prof. Regalado Trota Jose Jr., in an interview Friday, said DepEd should bring back history subjects which could pave the way for the young generation to connect with the past.

History, he said, is an important subject for students to appreciate and learn about their roots, culture and heritage.

‘Hopefully, Secretary (Sonny) Angara will see the reason for promoting historical education in the schools,’ Jose said, adding that even President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. has prodded Angara to beef up history subjects.

He said NHCP could give DepEd reading materials that can be translated into school materials, depending on grade levels.

‘We will have to work with the DepEd in terms of providing them with reading materials,’ he said, but noted that history writing for schools is not part of its NHCP’s mandate.

“The DepEd will hav
e to translate these reading materials and translate it into different levels of school years,” he said.

Department of Education Order 20, signed in 2014, removed Philippines History as a separate subject in high school.

Jose joined the Conservation Goes to the Province seminar in Lazi, Siquijor, which will culminate on Aug. 9, with more than 100 participants in attendance.
