National Day: Special Kullah Makes Tailor Centre Of Attraction

PUTRAJAYA, It was hard not to notice tailor Mohammad Jamil Abdul Hamid, who was in a special outfit of red, blue, yellow, and white at the National Day celebration at Dataran Putrajaya today.

What made him stand out from others was the ‘kullah’ (tall cap) with the words ‘Daulat Tuanku’ on his head.

“I want to show how special Malaysia is to me, even though I have Pakistani roots. I sewed this outfit myself combining elements of Malaysia and Pakistan. For example, the suit uses traditional Pakistani patterns, while the colours red, blue, yellow, and white reflect Malaysia.

“Apart from that, the kullah is also decorated with elements of the Jalur Gemilang. Every year, I go all out to celebrate National Day,” said Mohammad Jamil, who spent nearly RM3,000 on this year’s outfit.

He took three days to sew the dress.

“But the kullah took three weeks because of its more intricate details,” he added.

Mohammad Jamil, who resides in Kuala Lumpur, said that he has never missed attending the National Day celebratio
n for the past 15 years.

According to Mohammad Jami, he has been living in Malaysia since 1964, when he was five years old, after his father, Abdul Hamid Hussin, migrated to Kuala Lumpur to seek a livelihood as a tailor.

He said his father set up the Malayan Signals Corporation Tailor at the Ministry of Defence on Jalan Padang Tembak, Kuala Lumpur, before expanding the family business to Johor.
