MetMalaysia Announces Start of Northeast Monsoon on November 5.

Kuala Lumpur: The Northeast Monsoon, known as the monsoon season in Malaysia, is set to begin on November 5 and is expected to last until March 2025. MetMalaysia’s director-general, Dr. Mohd Hisham Mohd Anip, announced that during this period, Malaysia can anticipate between five and seven episodes of heavy rainfall.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, during the early phase of the Northeast Monsoon from November to December 2024, heavy rain episodes are projected to affect Kelantan, Terengganu, Pahang, Johor, Sarawak, and Sabah. From January to February 2025, the states likely to experience significant rainfall include Pahang, Johor, Sarawak, and Sabah. Dr. Hisham also mentioned that if the monsoon is particularly strong and coincides with a low-pressure weather system, other states may face heavy rain as well.

Dr. Hisham highlighted that continuous heavy rainfall over several days could result in flooding, particularly in low-lying and riverine areas. He further warned that if persistent heavy rain coincide
s with high tides and storm surges, the risk of flooding could significantly increase. Furthermore, strong northeasterly winds during the monsoon might lead to rough seas, elevated sea levels, and large waves in the South China Sea.

Towards the end of the Northeast Monsoon, from January to March 2025, the northern regions of the Peninsula are expected to experience reduced rainfall, potentially leading to hot and dry weather with the possibility of heatwaves. Nevertheless, Dr. Hisham noted that weather conditions are anticipated to be less severe compared to 2024, due to the persistence of the La Nina phenomenon from the end of this year until mid-next year.

Dr. Hisham urged the public to prepare for the upcoming monsoon season and stay informed through weather alerts from MetMalaysia. Information can be accessed via their official website, the myCuaca application, and MetMalaysia’s social media channels. For further inquiries, the public can contact their hotline.
