malaysiangThe Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) detained 19 foreign fishermen onboard two local fishing vessels at Pulau Perhentian Besar, Terengganu and the Tok Bali estuary on Sept 19 and 25.
Kelantan MMEA director Cpt (Maritime) Erwan Shah Soahdi said the fishermen, 24 to 55, were found to have dubious work permits and had violated license conditions by fishing at a distance less than permitted.
“The vessel’s skipper also tested positive for amphetamine and the cases will be investigated under the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, the Fisheries Act 1985 and the Immigration Act 1959/63.
“Both vessels were brought to the Kelantan MMEA jetty and handed over to the investigating officer for further action,’ he said in a statement today.
He also urged the local fishing community to comply with the law and to prioritise their safety while at sea.
