Heritage Home Badly Damaged By Floods, Owner Considering New Location To Build New House

BALING, A flood victim in Kampung Teluk Rambong near here had to accept that his heritage home, which was under repair would not be completed, after being severely damaged by a third wave of floods that hit the area last night.

Mohd Naim Asri Baharom, 46, said he had just begun renovation work on the 40-year-old house, but now he has to halt the repairs as most of the structure was damaged due to the flood.

“After the first wave, the iron bridge that provided access to my home was washed away by the strong currents, but the villagers worked together to build an alternative bridge.

“During the previous floods, only mud entered the house, but last night the walls and roof of my house collapsed, and sand and sludge filled the living space,” he said when met by reporters at his home today.

Recalling the events of last night, Mohd Naim Asri who lives alone said that he was at a neighbour’s house not far from the home when the incident took place.

“Heavy rain began at 5 pm yesterday, accompanied by strong wind
s, and by around 7 pm, the floods hit. I looked at the house and within moments the water reached the roof.

“In the darkness, I saw that the front part of the house had collapsed. When the water receded around 9 pm, I checked on the house again, and it was severely damaged,” he said.

Mohd Naim Asri stated that he is now considering looking for another area to build a new house, as the current location is deemed not safe.
