HAWANA Campus Tour 2024 Empowers Students in Media and Communication Understanding.


BANGI: The National Journalists’ Day (HAWANA) 2024 campus tour has been hailed as an excellent platform for students to deepen their understanding of the evolving media and communication landscape, particularly amidst the digital era. Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (UKM) deputy vice-chancellor (Academic and International Affairs) Professor Dr Abdul Halim Abdul Gafor emphasized the importance of this initiative, which exposes students to current practices and policies in journalism.

According to BERNAMA News Agency, Dr Abdul Halim expressed his appreciation to the Ministry of Communications and Bernama (Malaysian National News Agency) for organizing this program. He highlighted how technologies such as artificial intelligence (AI) and online platforms are enriching the media industry, providing students with invaluable insights into contemporary media dynamics. His remarks were delivered during an event at the university’s Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities.

The event was attended by notable figures i
ncluding the Ministry of Communications secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa, senior under secretary Mazlan Abd Mutalib, and Bernama CEO Nur-ul Afida Kamaludin, who also chairs the Hawana 2024 Working Committee. Leaders from Bernama, including editor-in-chief Arul Rajoo Durar Raj and deputy editor-in-chief Nasriah Darus, were also present.

Meanwhile, Associate Professor Dr Hazlina Abdul Halim, dean of Universiti Putra Malaysia’s Faculty of Modern Languages and Communication, noted that the HAWANA 2024 campus tour provides students with opportunities to engage in learning sessions outside the classroom and interact directly with industry professionals.

Associate Professor Tengku Siti Aisha Tengku Azman of the International Islamic University Malaysia’s Communications Department expressed her honor at participating in the tour series. She praised the content, covering critical topics like fake news, fact-checking, and Mobile Journalism (MoJo), which are directly relevant to students studying radio, te
levision, and online journalism.

The program also featured the Ministry of Communications donating computer and television sets, valued at RM20,000, to participating universities including UKM, UPM, IIUM, and others, presented by Bernama as part of the HAWANA Secretariat. Associate Professor Dr Mazura Mastura Muhammad from UPSI’s Faculty of Languages and Communication stated that this equipment would enhance the learning experience in their content creation laboratory.

The HAWANA 2024 campus tour at UKM marks the third edition following events in Sarawak and Sabah. Future sessions are planned for Melaka, Terengganu, and Penang, organized by the Ministry of Communications with Bernama as the implementing agency.
