malaysiangIPOH, Nurul Hazwanie Badeli, the daughter of a rubber tapper, whose plight recently went viral on social media, finally enrolled as a new student at Universiti Pendidikan Sultan Idris (UPSI) yesterday.
The touching story of Nurul Hazwanie’s family’s financial struggles captured the attention of UPSI, which selected the student from Kampung Tok Pelanduk, Pasir Mas in Kelantan as one of the beneficiaries of the First Semester Study Registration Assistance Scheme, offered by the university’s Centre for Wakaf, Endowment, Zakat, Khairat, and Sedekah (WEZAS UPSI).
WEZAS director Associate Prof Dr Mohd Abdul Nasir said Nurul Hazwanie was one of 93 students who qualified for the new student registration assistance scheme for admission to 2024/25 semester one.
He said students in any state including Sabah and Sarawak are eligible to apply.
‘WEZAS in collaboration with the Treasurer of the Academic Affairs Division (BHEA) and the Student Affairs Department (JHEPA) will screen new registration data to identify stud
ents who need help,’ he said in a statement.
Mohd Abdul said a special link is then provided in the registration portal to be navigated for students to fill in the required information
‘Based on the data, WEZAS went to the field by making social visits to the homes of students who need help, conducting a survey and screening for eligibility.
‘This scheme is divided into two forms of assistance, namely the critical category of 36 students who receive RM3,000 while the semi-critical category of 57 students will be given RM1500, making a total of RM193,500 allocated for this assistance scheme,’ he said.
UPSI deputy vice-chancellor Prof Dr Norkhalid Salimin said that in line with the wishes of the Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE), UPSI will see to the welfare of students to ensure that the application process for admission to UPSI runs smoothly and that financial issues for registration can be resolved.
At the same time, he said all the facilities at the university were mobilised including providing a res
idential college for chaperone parents and also the transportation of students from KLIA to UPSI for students from Sabah and Sarawak.
UPSI yesterday accepted the registration of 4,195 new students for the 2024/2025 September intake for Bachelor’s Degree courses.
