Flood victims appreciate government assistance

PASIR MAS, March 3 — Flood victims in Kelantan are grateful and appreciate the distribution of Bantuan Wang Ihsan (BWI) as announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob yesterday.

Sofie Yudin Aziz, 27, of Kampung Tok Sangkut here, said he would use the BWI to supplement his family’s daily expenses.

“The flood this time was unexpected because the water level rose sharply in the house and I did not have time to save several equipment, especially electronic items.

“Alhamdulillah, when the prime minister announced yesterday that the government will disburse the BWI, I felt grateful and thankful to the government for not neglecting flood victims,” he said when met by Bernama here today.

Wan Abdul Rahman Wan Hanafi, 55, of Kampung Bongor here, also said that he would use the money to buy basic necessities.

“Several villagers here have had to depend on the relevant agencies to provide basic food like bread, biscuits, sugar and so on because we have been stranded following the recent floods,” he said.

He also said that he did not have time move to the temporary relief centre after the route leading to the place was inundated.

Yesterday, the prime minister announced that the distribution of BWI assistance to 7,651 heads of households affected by the current floods in Kelantan and Terengganu would be channeled immediately.

“We expect the RM1,000 assistance for each head of household to be gven as soon as possible,” Ismail Sabri had said.

Apart from BWI, the government will also channel RM2,500 for the purchase of basic home necessities. As for damage to electrical equipment, the government will give a voucher or rebate of RM500 for purchases, while for the repair of vehicles, it will provide a voucher of RM1,000.
