KUALA LUMPUR: Over 300 master tailors, designers and fashion enthusiasts from 14 countries in Asia and Europe are flocking to the city for the 28th Congress of Federation of Asian Master Tailors (FAMT) 2024 from today until Aug 6.

Tourism Malaysia Board of Directors deputy chairman Datuk Yeoh Soon Hin said the congress aims to showcase individual skills and talents, as well as promote exchanges among industry professionals from various countries.

He said the tailoring industry, like many other types of industries, contributes not only to the country’s economic development and labour market but also to industrial history and cultural heritage.

‘I believe that most players in these industries are self-reliant entrepreneurs or have inherited businesses from their ancestors and undoubtedly, with their own stories of struggle and experiences.

‘These stories and experiences serve as good lessons or reference materials for the younger generation, particularly those who aspire to start or expand their own busines
ses,’ he said when opening the FAMT 2024, here today.

Also present were the Communications Ministry secretary-general Datuk Mohamad Fauzi Md Isa and Federation of Tailors’ Guild Malaysia president Sam Ng Teck Yau.

Speaking to reporters later, Yeoh called on the Federation of Tailors’ Guild Malaysia, to make the proposed ‘Fashion and Design Hub’ a reality through a collaborative effort with the government and tailoring professionals from Asian countries.

‘If this hub is successfully established, it means we have created a large business platform to expand the market and enhance the visibility of our country’s tailoring, fashion and design industries,’ he said.
