DSWD provides aid to 300 evacuees in La Union town


Malasiqui: The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) provided 300 family food packs to evacuees in Bacnotan town, La Union late Thursday.

The DSWD Ilocos Regional office said the 300 families have evacuated due to strong winds and flooding in their locality caused by Severe Tropical Storm Kristine (international name: Trami)

Based on DSWD’s data, the prepositioned food and non-food items in the 19 regional and provincial satellite warehouses in the region ready for augmentation to local government units (LGUs) amounted to about PHP104.2 million.

These include 93,750 family food packs and 17,066 other food and non-food items.

DSWD Ilocos Regional Director Marie Angela Gopalan said the department is ready to provide food and non-food items once the LGUs’ requests are validated.

The La Union provincial government has provided PHP239,960 worth of food packs and nonfood items to 844 families, or 2,437 individuals from the towns of Luna, Bangar, Balaoan, San Juan, Bacnotan, Rosario, Burgos, Aring
ay, Caba, Bauang, Agoo, and San Fernando City being served inside the 40 evacuation centers in the province as of 5 a.m. on Friday, according to the La Union Provincial Information Office (PIO).

The La Union Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office reported that there are now 5, 358 families or 15, 732 individuals in 12 villages affected by the impact of the weather disturbance.

A total of 167 houses have been reportedly damaged in several municipalities.

Specifically, there is a partially damaged house in Luna town, 32 in Balaoan, 20 in San Juan, 47 in Bacnotan, 53 in Bauang, two in Agoo, six in Naguilian, and two in Bangar.

There are two totally damaged houses in Rosario, and one each in Bauang and Naguilian due to strong winds and fallen trees.

The search and rescue operations on the missing fisherman from Poro San Fernando City are still ongoing.

Flooding caused by storm surge and high tide in some localities persists.
