DSWD boosts aid to families hit by ‘Kristine’ in Caraga

The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) 13 (Caraga) distributed 9,620 family food packs (FFPs) to families affected by Tropical Storm Kristine in Surigao del Norte and Dinagat Islands, the agency said in a statement Friday.

DSWD-13 said at least 1,876 FFPs are allocated in Surigao del Norte and 7,744 in Dinagat Islands as of Thursday.

Claver, San Benito, and Surigao City in Surigao del Norte and the towns of Basilisa, San Jose, Tubajon, and Libjo in Dinagat Islands also received assistance.

In Surigao City’s coastal village of Mabua, residents reported evacuating due to strong winds and high waves, with many homes sustaining damage. The city government is providing food and essentials to evacuees.

‘We experienced strong winds and high waves early morning on Oct. 23. Due to fear, we evacuated to our barangay gymnasium,’ said Melba Solon, 54, the chairperson of Purok 1, a coastal area in Barangay Mabua, Surigao City.

Upon returning around 7:00 a.m., they found their houses damaged by high
waves that struck their neighborhood.

Solon said the city government had provided them with food and other needs at the evacuation center.

In a situational report Friday, the Office of the Civil Defense-13 said the storm has affected over 36,000 people and damaged 39 homes in the region
