Dagoon, Go sweep MVP honors in Olongapo tennis tourney

MANILA: Olongapo City’s Cadee Jan Dagoon stunned top seed Ave Maria Policarpio, 6-3, 6-2, to capture the girls’ U14 title in the Mayor Rolen Paulino Jr. National Juniors Tennis Championships at the Olongapo Tennis Club on April 7.

Dagoon, the elementary division singles silver medalist at the 2023 Palarong Pambansa, settled for a runner-up finish in the U16 category where she retired against Nueva Ecija’s Jayden Reece Ballado in the final. The score was 5-1.

Ballado ousted No. 1 Sandra Bautista, 7-5, 6-4, in the semifinal round of the Group I tournament presented by Dunlop.

Meanwhile, Marcus Go of Quezon City bagged the boys’ U12 crown over Jairus Peralta, 6-2, 6-2. But he lost to No. 1 Mikael Honrado of Makati City, 5-7, 5-7 in the U14 final.

Dagoon and Go both earned MVP honors in the tournament which is part of the nationwide circuit put up by Palawan Pawnshop president/CEO Bobby Castro.

Other winners were Olongapo’s Darwin Cosca and QC’s Chloe Mercado, Samuel Davila of Cainta, Rizal, Maristella Torre
campo, and Yuan Torrente.

Cosca outplayed doubles partner Ariel Cabaral, 6-3, 6-4, while Mercado clobbered Shiloh Cruz, 6-3, 6-2, in the U18 category.

Davila defeated Lucas Go, 6-4, 6-1 (boys’ U16), Torrecampo whipped Ella Paglalunan, 6-0, 6-2 (girls’ U12) and Torrente demolished Enzo Niere, 4-0, 4-0 (unisex U10).

In the doubles, Cosca and Cabaral conquered Go and Davila, 8-4, to claim the boy’s title while Ballado and Mercado won over Althea Liwag and Cruz with the same score.

Siblings Gil and Pete Niera upset top seeds Anthony Cosca and Troan Vytiaco, 8-5, in the boys final, while Dagoon and Alexa Cruspero prevailed over Athena Liwag and Auyl Gonzaga, 8-7, in the girls division.

Torrente and Joaquin Dacyon pocket the U10 trophy after pulling off an 8-5 victory over Jacob Dizon and Enzo Niere.

Olongapo will also host a juniors and legends tournament in September, culminating in the National Men’s Open in December.
