CelcomDigi Launches Initiative To Tackle Scams, Provide Online Safety Awareness

Mobile network operator CelcomDigi Berhad (CelcomDigi) recently organised two online safety and anti-scam masterclass advocacy programmes to empower content creators, social media influencers, and radio presenters with knowledge on online safety.

CelcomDigi’s Head of Sustainability, Philip Ling, said in a statement that the initiative follows a digital landscape filled with various fraudulent activities, cyberbullying, and misinformation.

He said content creators and social media influencers, with their large followings, had the power to encourage their audiences to use the internet positively and safely. ‘Similarly, radio presenters possess a unique ability to interact with and influence their listeners daily, providing guidance and accurate information on online safety,’ he said.

The advocacy programmes held featured experts in cybersecurity, digital ethics, behavioural psychology, and child online safety who share insights with content creators, social media influencers, and radio presenters on various
online threats and scams.

The masterclass training also included case studies of online safety involving children and best practices for protecting them in the digital world.

‘Our recent 2024 National Scam Awareness Survey revealed that while 85 per cent of Malaysians are aware of online scams, nearly 60 per cent have experienced or know someone who has experienced a scam.

‘Therefore, through this masterclass, we are not just training influencers; we are building a collective and comprehensive voice to combat online scams and threats. We believe these participants can become a dynamic advocacy community driving positive change in fighting scams, enhancing online safety, and building a trusted digital society,’ he said.

Among the participants in the masterclass were well-known influencers such as Raj Mahal, Esty Richard, Eizuwan Fulamak, Jane Teoh, Hubert CEO, Abang Lawyer Hafiz Baharuddin, Vikar World, and Alexey Brock.

The event also saw participation from radio presenters representing major radio stati
ons, including Nasional FM, Minnal FM, Ai FM, Asyik FM, BERNAMA Radio, Hitz FM, Mix FM, Era FM, Sinar FM, and BFM.

The masterclass is part of the Creators IRL (In Real Life) initiative launched on Aug 8, a collaboration with Ratio:Cause, Meta Platforms Inc., and the Women’s Centre for Change, aimed at addressing issues of online safety and fraud.
