Cebu airport preps for Undas passenger influx

Mactan Cebu International Airport (MCIA) is ramping up preparations as it expects a passenger surge as the country observes All Saints and Souls Days on Nov. 1 and 2, the airport chief said on Wednesday.

Julius Neri Jr., chief executive officer and general manager of MCIA, said they are expecting 50 percent more of the daily average traffic as Undas nears.

Neri said the Department of Transportation’s ‘Oplan Biyaheng Ayos’ help desk will be established at the airport lobby from Oct. 31 until Nov. 5 to assist the passengers.

‘We have all of this oplan (operations plan) every year and so we already know what to do,’ Neri told reporters at the sideline of the ceremonial signing of a memorandum of understanding with the Airports Council International (ACI) on environmental efforts aimed at eliminating carbon emissions by 2050.

He said the airport will place medical and emergency personnel on standby as well as additional crew to ensure the smooth flow of passengers at the domestic and international terminals.

N
eri urged the passengers to come early, at least two to three hours before their flight.

Meanwhile, the MCIA chief underscored the Visayas’ premier airport’s commitment to having airport operations aligned with the environmental endeavors that is to achieve zero carbon emissions by 2050.

The MCIA and ACI Asia-Pacific and Middle East formalized on Wednesday a partnership to craft a sustainable plan for eliminating carbon emissions.

Athanasios Titonis, chief executive officer of Aboitiz GMR Megawide Cebu Airport Corporation, and Stefano Baronci, director general of ACI Asia-Pacific and Middle East, signed the MOU to cement the partnership aimed at transforming MCIA a sustainable airport in the country.

“Together, we have cultivated an airport ecosystem that consistently demonstrates its effectiveness. With Airports Council International (ACI) now joining us on our sustainability journey, we are confident that their expertise will bring valuable insights and further elevate our efforts toward
creating a more sustainable future,” Neri said in his remarks.

MCIA was recently accredited with Level 1 certification from Airport Carbon Accreditation, the globally recognized carbon management program for airports.

The MOU for the Net Zero Roadmap program will support the airport in progressing to Level 5, the highest level of the program.

Achieving Level 5 requires the airport to maintain a Net Zero carbon balance for Scope 1 and 2 emissions, while actively addressing Scope 3 emissions.
