Foodpanda Malaysia hopes the government will maintain gig-worker-focused funding in Budget 2025, similar to previous initiatives to help them thrive.

The online food and grocery delivery platform also proposed that programmes such as Telco Rahmah and upskilling courses via technical and vocational education and training (TVET) be extended.

‘Business-friendly policies will drive further innovation and growth within the gig economy,’ he said in a statement.

Shubham also anticipates continued efforts to develop the halal economy, with delivery platforms like foodpanda facilitating the expansion of halal-certified businesses in Malaysia.

He said bekal by foodpanda, positions foodpanda as a pioneer in halal food delivery services and also helps upskill delivery partners who are trained to ensure that halal-certified food and products are deli

‘These transferable skills enable our delivery partners to participate in this rapidly growing sector, should they wish to do so beyond the gig economy,’ he said.

To recognise and address the needs of the gig economy, the government has introduced initiatives such as the self-employment social security scheme under the Social Security Organisation, providing insurance coverage and safety nets to gig workers.

The government also created a gig i-Saraan programme under the Employees Provident Fund to give gig workers an avenue for retirement savings.

Additionally, MYFutureJobs and Malaysia Digital Economy Corporation’s Global Online Workforce programme focuses on job matching and upskilling freelancers, enhancing their opportunities in the digital economy.

The Education and Youth and Sports Ministries also offer upskilling courses on TVET to enable gig workers to adapt to ever-changing market demands.
