Abang Johari Launches Cybersarawak

KUCHING, Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg today launched The CyberSarawak initiative during the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak (IDECS) 2024 here.

The Sarawak Multimedia Authority (SMA) in a statement today said the initiative with the tagline ‘Stay Safe’, ‘Stay Smart’ and ‘Stay Secure’ is a comprehensive effort aimed at strengthening Sarawak’s cyber security posture to foster trust and greater participation in the digital economy.

It said the ‘Stay Safe’ program focuses on creating a central platform for the public to report cybersecurity incidents while the ‘Stay Smart’ program emphasises raising cyber security awareness, particularly among underserved communities to combat emerging cyber threats.

‘Meanwhile, the ‘Stay Secure’ program is dedicated to assessing and improving the cyber security posture of critical information infrastructures including government agencies within Sarawak,’ it said.

SMA general manager Datuk Dr Anderson Tiong Ing Heng said the Sarawak governmen
t recognises that robust cyber security measures are essential to protect sensitive data, maintain public trust and ensure the integrity of digital infrastructure.

‘In 2023, in line with the Sarawak Digital Economy Blueprint 2030 a dedicated cyber security unit was established as a means to operationalise cyber security initiatives in Sarawak,’ he said adding that Cyber Security Unit operating under SMA is solely dedicated to strengthening the State’s cyber security framework through nine key functional roles.

It said one of its primary mandates is to offer cybersecurity services and guidance to government bodies, businesses, and citizens.

‘Cybercrime is a fast-growing revenue generating enterprise with a projected growth rate of 15 per cent per year, reaching USD$10.5 trillion annually by 2025.

‘The pervasive nature of cyber threats especially to the economy, highlight the need for a robust cyber security measure across all sectors, for both private and public enterprises including citizens,’ it added.
