ROME: Some 3.6 percent of Italian teenagers, or almost one in 30, don’t identify as male or female, according to a new survey out Tuesday.
The survey by research institute IARD, carried out on 3,427 students between the ages of 13 and 19, for the first time gave the option “I don’t identify” in the gender declaration field.
“The figures probably underestimate the real size of the phenomenon,” said Piernicola Garofalo, past president of the Italian Society of Adolescent Medicine.
The survey also found that the fear of war had become a “nightmare” for 63 percent of Italian teenagers.
