2ND INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON TROPICAL SCIENCE 2024 WILL BE HELD IN SARAWAK

The Academy of Science Malaysia (ASM) and the Tropical Science Foundation (TSF) will organise the 2nd International Conference on Tropical Sciences 2024 (TropSc 2024) in Kuching, Sarawak, from Oct 16 to 17.

TropSc 2024 Steering Committee Chair, Professor Emerita Tan Sri Mazlan Othman said the conference will highlight four tracks – tropical agriculture, tropical architecture and engineering, tropical medicine and tropical natural resources – and feature discussions by international and local panellists.

‘We’ll also be talking about climate change in TropSc 2024 and we’re going to be sharing data about our resources. We will also be talking about how to protect indigenous knowledge,’ she said after appearing as a guest on the Bernama TV programme The Nation, adding that topic of binary biodiversity will also be addressed.

‘Some of the statistics I have read (shows that) about 75 percent of biodiversity in Latin America, for instance, are gone. So, we need to take very urgent action on those issues.

‘What
we (TropSc 2024) want to do is to create an environment for open science because we have the same level of risk and level of interest. We will share this information among ourselves and we can decide how much of that goes outside of the tropics,’ she said.

Mazlan also expressed her hope that those who participate in TropicSc 2024, would come together and serve as an alliance of the tropics to address its problems.

TropicSc 2024 is organised in collaboration with Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) and supported by the Sarawak Government.

She said for all Malaysians who are interested in participating in this programme can register at https://www.akademisains.gov.my/events/tropsc2024/.
