UST secures No. 2 in Shakey’s volleyball; UP enters win column


Manila: University of Santo Tomas outplayed Mapua University, 25-18, 25-17, 25-20, for its second win in the Shakey’s Super League Collegiate Pre-Season Championship at Rizal Memorial Coliseum in Manila on Sunday.

Wing spikers Kyla Cordora and Xyza Gula scored nine and eight points, respectively as the Growling Tigers secured second spot behind the University of the East Lady Warriors (3-0) in Pool B.

Margaret Althea chipped in seven points while Jonna Chris Perdido and Regina Grace Jurado added six points each for UST, which also pulled off a 25-16, 28-30, 25-17, 25-14 win over Lyceum of the Philippines University a day earlier.

‘We just enjoyed the game. We were relaxed in the first set. We just played our game and took it slow,” Cordora said in the post-match interview.

After Bianca Mikaela Plaza’s attack put UST at match point, 24-17, the Lady Cardinals came up with three straight points, until Cordora scored to wrap up the match in one hour and 23 minutes.

Middle blocker Alyanna Nicole Ong finished
with six attacks, one block and an ace for Mapua, which remained winless after three outings.

Svetlana Cayanan added five attacks while Freighanne Seanelle Garcia had four attacks and an ace.

UST will seek its third win against University of Perpetual Help System Dalta at 6 p.m. Friday before facing UE on Oct. 13.

Meanwhile, University of the Philippines-Diliman registered its first win in Pool C at the expense of Colegio de San Juan de Letran, 17-25, 25-18, 25-18, 25-23.

Middle blocker Kassandra Thalia Doering produced nine attacks and seven blocks for the Fighting Maroons, who tied their opponents at 1-1.

Joan Marie Monares contributed 11 points, including four blocks, while Niña Ytang had eight attacks and two blocks for UP, which bounced back from a 14-25, 25-18, 24-26, 12-25 defeat to De La Salle University on Sept. 28.

Gia Marcel Maquilang led the Lady Knights with 18 points, followed by Sheena Sarie with 14 points and Marie Judiel Nitura with 12 points.

Also playing on Friday are defending champ
ion National University against Emilio Aguinaldo College at 1 p.m. in Pool A and La Salle against Letran at 3:30 p.m. in Pool C.
