KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia has prepared a draft resolution for the United Nations General Assembly which proposes the removal of Israel as a member of the organization if it is found violating laws, rules, and decisions concerning Palestine. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced in the Dewan Rakyat that the draft resolution is under negotiation and may soon be presented at the UN General Assembly for approval.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, Malaysia joined the Core Group on October 31, 2024, to draft a UN General Assembly resolution requesting an Advisory Opinion from the International Court of Justice regarding Israel’s obligation to allow UN activities in the Occupied Palestinian Territory. This initiative is intended to ensure that UN agencies, international organizations, and third countries can operate within these territories with the consent of the Palestinian government, benefiting the Palestinian population.
Once approved, the resolution is expected to provide a legal framework for the U
nited Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA) to continue offering essential services such as education, healthcare, and humanitarian aid to over six million Palestinian refugees in Gaza, the West Bank, Jordan, Lebanon, and Syria. Anwar emphasized that UNRWA has been a primary conduit for international aid to Palestinians for 75 years, and Malaysia fully endorses its critical role, pledging to enhance cooperation and support.
Prime Minister Anwar noted that Malaysia’s unwavering support for UNRWA has been acknowledged by Commissioner-General Philippe Lazzarini, who expressed gratitude to Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan at a previous UN session and urged further collaboration.
The prime minister also highlighted the ongoing conflict in Gaza, emphasizing that it has been a year since Israel’s actions in the region led to severe humanitarian consequences. As of November 1, 43,204 Palestinians, including 16,500 children, have died, and 101,641 have been injured,
with 11,000 reported missing. An average of 118 Palestinians have been killed daily since October 2023. Anwar expressed concern over the persistent violence, attributing it to both direct and indirect support from Israel’s allies.
