UAAP: UP’s Labita bags 100m gold; sets new record


University of the Philippines (UP) bet Alhryan Labita delivered a stunning performance in the men’s 100-meter dash of the UAAP Season 86 athletics tournament at the PhilSports track and field stadium in Pasig City on Wednesday night.

Labita won the race for the second straight year and this time with a new record of 10.57 seconds.

During the afternoon heats, he clocked 10.66 seconds to erase the 11-year-old mark of national team standout Jesson Cid of Far Eastern University (10.89s).

Last year’s boys MVP Kent Francis Jardin of Adamson University settled for the silver medal in 10.70s, while UP’s Clint Niño Neri got the bronze medal in 10.76s.

Juliana Talaro gave UP another gold medal when she topped the women’s 5000m walk in 27:54.30.

Meanwhile, University of Santo Tomas collected six gold medals coming from John Eman Calapuan (boys discus throw), Gabriel Cervantes (boys 5,000m walk), Iza Lorraine Pangilinan (girls 100m), Aira Mae Gacusan (girls 2000m walk), Lianne Diana Pama (women’s 100m) and Hockett
Delos Santos (men’s pole vault).

University of the East captured four gold medals courtesy of Jazen Araño (girls hammer throw), Jyzel Mae Gabriel (girls 800m), Kasandra Hazel Alcantara (women’s hammer throw) and Mariel Abuan (women’s high jump), while Adamson University had three gold medals coming from Aaron Prince Angeles (boys triple jump), John Dave Tumangan (boys 100m) and Hussein Loraña (boys 800m).

National University bagged two gold medals courtesy of Tyronne Exequiel Flores and John Lloyd Cabalo.

Flores dominated the men’s shot put for the third time, claiming victory with a new record of 14.93 meters.

Cabalo, on the other hand, triumphed in the men’s 800m with a time of 1:56.40. De La Salle University’s Bernalyn Bejoy won the women’s 800m in 2:14.54.
