Tony Fernandes receives Sabah Tourism Award


KOTA KINABALU, Capital A Bhd chief executive officer (CEO) Tan Sri Tony Fernandes has been recognised by the Sabah Tourism Board (STB) for his exceptional contributions to the state’s tourism industry with the Sabah Tourism Appreciation Award.

Fernandes received the award from STB chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai, who is also Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment Assistant Minister, here today.

In a statement, AirAsia said this recognition acknowledges Fernandes’ impact on the state’s tourism sector over the past two decades.

Since AirAsia was established 22 years ago, Fernandes has been a driving force in revolutionizing air travel and fostering economic growth in Sabah, popularly known as the Land below the Wind.

The airline said under his leadership, AirAsia has not only expanded its reach but has also helped position Sabah as a thriving hub for tourism and hospitality, creating substantial employment opportunities.

His leadership has been instrumental in driving state tourism growth and his vision
and dedication have established AirAsia’s foundation for continued expansion, ensuring that Sabah remains at the forefront of regional tourism, the statement said.

According to AirAsia, the state today serves as AirAsia’s second-largest hub in Malaysia, underscoring the airline’s deep-rooted commitment to the state.

‘With 13 domestic and 14 international routes currently in operation, AirAsia plans to further expand its services, including the addition of another aircraft by year’s end,’ it said.

Starting Aug 30, AirAsia will launch daily Kota Kinabalu-Subang Airport flights.

The airline also plans to introduce 10 new routes over the next six months, targeting destinations in China and Vietnam to bolster Sabah’s appeal as a top travel destination.

AirAsia Aviation Group chairman Tan Sri Jamaludin Ibrahim said Fernandes’ commitment to Sabah’s development is truly remarkable.

‘The groundwork he has laid will propel AirAsia forward, allowing us to continue playing a pivotal role in the state’s future,’ he said.
