malaysiangBUSAN, Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil’s three-day working visit to South Korea which ended yesterday, gave added value to Malaysia to optimise the application of artificial intelligence (AI) in telecommunications network, as well as obtaining ‘tips’ to improve the quality of the country’s film industry.
Even thought it was short, the working visit which started on Monday, was seen to have yielded positive results through several meetings and the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with telecommunication companies.
Malaysia and South Korea, among others, agreed to improve the essence of the MoU involving bilateral cooperation in the field of information and communication technology (ICT) which was signed in 2019 involving aspects of AI.
The matter was raised in Fahmi’s meeting with the Minister of Science and ICT (MSIT) of the Republic of Korea Yoo Sang-Im which took place in conjunction with GSMA M360 APAC 2024 conference in Seoul.
“We have examined aspects of infrastructure such as telec
ommunications infrastructure and how AI can be utilised not only to strengthen and optimise the telecommunications network itself, but AI is also an application that can be used through the network,” said Fahmi when commenting on the working visit.
In the conference which brought together representatives of mobile network operators around the world, Fahmi also presented the voice of Malaysia in his keynote address entitled “Building the AI-Enabled Digital Backbone”.
At the occasion, Fahmi said Malaysia has outlined three main pillars to develop a Digital Infrastructure powered by Artificial Intelligence (Building the AI-Enabled Digital Backbone), namely the implementation of visionary policies, sustainable infrastructure development, as well as fostering skills in all levels of society.
He also witnessed the signing of a service agreement between TM and Radian Arc which aims to meet the demands of the gaming industry, involving the strengthening of cloud gaming infrastructure and computing advantages.
In
addition, CelcomDigi Bhd and South Korea’s leading wireless telecommunications operator SK Telecom Co Ltd signed an MoU to collaborate on AI applications.
In Busan, Fahmi emphasised the importance of having a box office information system like the one used by Korea (KOBIS-Korean Box Office Information System).
He asked the National Film Development Corporation (FINAS) to study its use in Malaysia to obtain accurate information in “real time” from cinema operators related to ticket sales figures for each film.
He said, FINAS was also asked to review the FINAS Act 1981 since streaming methods are increasing and cinemas are facing challenges from platforms that show movies online.
Before ending his working visit, Fahmi held a meeting with the ‘powerful figures’ of the film industry in Korea, namely the chairman of the Busan International Film Festival (BIFF) Park Kwang-su, chairman of the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) Han Sang-Jun and the CEO of the Busan Cinema Centre. he official location of BIFF which is the Busan Cinema Center or “Dureraum”. BIFF is one of the prestigious film festivals in Asia that opened its curtain yesterday until Oct 11.
