KUALA LUMPUR: Three reputable construction players, namely MMC-Gamuda KVMRT Sdn Bhd, IJM Construction Sdn Bhd, and Sunway Construction Group Bhd, have won the Best Project awards at the Malaysian Construction Industry Excellence Awards (MCIEA) 2024 recently.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, MMC-Gamuda KVMRT’s Klang Valley Mass Rapid Transit: Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line/ Line 2 won the Best Project Award – Infrastructure (Major Category) as it showcases Malaysia’s commitment to engineering innovation. The project manager, Adil Putra Ahmad, highlighted the debut of the world’s first autonomous tunnel boring machine (A-TBM), powered by artificial intelligence, marking a significant advancement in safe tunneling through complex geological formations.
Adil Putra emphasized that the technology, paired with the variable density TBM, underscores Malaysia’s capabilities in setting a global standard for tunneling innovation and precision. MMC-Gamuda also acknowledged the contributions of its workforce, with
over 50,000 individuals gaining invaluable experience and skills in advanced tunneling and Building Information Modelling (BIM). The MRT Putrajaya Line team demonstrated resilience by establishing dedicated quarantine centers and lab testing facilities to safeguard the health of over 20,000 personnel during the project’s progression.
Meanwhile, IJM Construction Sdn Bhd’s chief executive officer, Wong Heng Wai, expressed that receiving the award was a significant moment for the company. The company received the Best Project Award under the Major Building Category for its Menara Affin project at the Tun Razak Exchange (TRX). Menara Affin, a GBI Gold and LEED Gold-certified building, was completed amidst the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic, setting a benchmark for green developments in Malaysia.
Wong highlighted IJM’s ability to navigate adversity while maintaining quality standards. He noted that the use of BIM at Menara Affin ensured accurate design coordination, reduced waste, and streamlined project ph
ases from inception to facility management.
Sunway Construction Group Bhd’s group deputy managing director, Richard Wong Kwan Song, said the recognition for its Parcel F Government Complex project reflected the dedication and collaborative spirit of the entire project team. The complex, which clinched the Best Project Award – Building (Major Category), incorporates green features and showcases Sunway Construction’s commitment to sustainability. The project will soon be handed over to Putrajaya Holdings Sdn Bhd, the master developer of Putrajaya.
MCIEA 2024, organized by the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB), aims to honor project owners, contractors, consultants, and projects demonstrating quality, safety, productivity, and sustainability. First introduced in 2000, MCIEA 2024 marks the 20th installment of the prestigious construction industry awards, recognizing top-performing developers, contractors, and projects in Malaysia.
