SUKMA 2024: Young Nurul Syasya Khairina wants to repeat golden lift

JASIN, Melaka’s precocious weightlifter Nurul Syasya Khairina Syamsur is fully prepared to repeat her gold medal achievement at the Sarawak 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA).

The Nyalas-born athlete had created history by winning Melaka’s first-ever weightlifting gold at the last SUKMA two years ago.

Nurul Syasya Khairina, 15, is determined to excel again to repay the trust of everyone, especially her parents, who have sacrificed much to support her in the sport.

Competing in the 55-kilogramme (kg) category, she is now focusing 100 per cent on perfecting her lifting techniques and trying to stay injury-free.

‘I pray that I can contribute another medal for Melaka this year, and I will do my best for the team. I don’t want to become complacent or overly confident but will strive to train hard until the actual competition,’ she told reporters.

The national backup weightlifter anticipates tough competition from Perlis athletes but sees it as a challenge to apply all the training and techniques taught by her coach
.

She still remembers the useful advice and tips from Tokyo Olympics 2020 gold medallist Hidilyn Diaz from the Philippines, which she received during training in Kampung Kesang Tua.

‘Hidilyn reminded me to train diligently, avoid staying up late, and reduce phone use, especially at night, because this discipline is necessary for success,’ she said.

Meanwhile, Melaka weightlifting manager Imran Lamin said Melaka will send seven weightlifters to Sarawak 2024 SUKMA.

‘At this stage, our main focus is on refining the techniques practised by all the athletes to ensure their performances are smooth. We are also relieved that all shortlisted athletes are injury-free and at their best level,’ he said.

The weightlifting events will take place from Aug 19 to 23 at the Tan Sri Datuk Amar Stephen Kalong Ningkan Sports Hall in Betong.
