The Federal Territory (WP) athletics squad are targeting three gold medals at the 2024 Sarawak Malaysia Games (SUKMA XXI) which will open on Aug 17.

Team manager G. Raman said the three gold medal prospects were targeted in the men’s and women’s 10,000 metres (m) race walk and the men’s 20,000m race walk.

He said the state team known as ‘WiPers’ were also targeting two more medals regardless of colour for the middle-distance running events of 800m and 1,500m.

‘For the 10,000m and 20,000m, the athletes who competed each showed impressive performance during the Super Series 1 Athletics Championship in Johor and the Perak Super Series II Open Athletics Championship in Ipoh, Perak in May and the Malaysian Open Championships in Kuantan, Pahang in June.

‘Statistics for the athletes who performed at (the KL) SUKMA this time also show that the athletes who are aiming for the gold medal are poised in the best position,’ he said when contacted by Bernama.

He said that the women’s 10,000m race walk will see Kok Hu
i Ying in action while both the 10,000m and 20,000m men’s events will be represented by Khor Jhing Hong.

At the 2022 edition of Sukma in Kuala Lumpur, the WP athletics squad brought home three gold medals through the heptathlon, 100m hurdles and 4×400m events.
