SUKMA 2024: Perak finally Lift ‘Silver Curse’ To Land Men’s Softball Gold

MIRI, Perak finally got the softball gold they have been craving after crushing Terengganu 15-4 in the final of the men’s competition at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA) here today.

Mindful that they were losing finalists in 2011 and 2013, when softball was last featured, Perak came out strong, scoring three runs in the first inning and setting the tone for the game.

Perak continued their dominance by adding 12 more runs against Terengganu’s four in the five-inning match to cement the win and claim the gold.

‘Alhamdulillah, the long-standing joke about Perak only ever winning ‘silver’ is now a thing of the past.

‘We’ve finally transformed that silver into gold,” Perak head coach Ridzuan Rawi said, playfully referencing the Malay meaning of ‘Perak,’ which translates to ‘silver.’

In the women’s competition, Johor landed the gold with a 5-0 victory over Perak.

Johor team manager Wan Eizalie Wan Mohamed Nor praised her squad’s efforts, noting that their year-long preparation, including a key tournament in S
ingapore, paid off.

‘I’m incredibly proud of their achievement and thrilled to see them turn the bronze (2011 edition) to gold,’ she said.
