Student determined to sit for exam despite injuries following accident

JOHOR BAHRU, March 2 — A Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) candidate was determined to sit for the examination despite enduring pain from his waist and elbow injuries following an accident yesterday evening.

The student, Zahiruddin Zulkarnain, 18, who was involved in a mishap on the Johor Bahru Eastern Dispersal Link Expressway (JB EDL) Permas bound, said he could not afford to miss the Bahasa Melayu examination paper today as he was fully prepared and did not want to fail in the SPM.

He said as the Bahasa Melayu paper was very important, he was willing to sit and complete the paper before seeking treatment at a clinic this evening.

According to Zahiruddin, a Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan (SMK) Kota Masai 2 student, he was riding his motorcycle on his way to meet a relative in Stulang when the accident occurred at 6.40 pm.

“It was raining on the EDL when I was hemmed in on my left and right by a big lorry and a car. Shocked, I braked suddenly, fell down and was almost run over by the lorry. But I kicked the truck tyre and was sent flying before I gathered myself, got up and ran to the side.

“I could not get treatment after the incident as most clinics were closed. But after the Bahasa Melayu 2 papers this evening, my parents will take me to a nearby clinic,” he said when met at SMK Kota Masai 2 here today.

Zahiruddin said, after over two hours answering the Bahasa Malaysia 1 paper this morning, he also took a rest and laid down to ease the pain in his waist.

“I leave it to God and try to do my best. Nevertheless, the prayers of my parents to a certain extent boosted my spirit despite the pain and suffering,” said Zahiruddin who aspired to further his studies at the Industrial Training Institute (ILP) in automotive technology.

Today, 407,097 students including 50,317 candidates from Johor, sat for the 2021 SPM examination at 3,000 centres nationwide.
