Strong Quake Strikes Papua New Guinea

KUALA LUMPUR, A strong earthquake, with a magnitude of 6.2 on the Richter scale, occurred at 9.03 am today near the northern coast of Papua New Guinea, according to the Malaysian Meteorological Department.

It said in a statement that the epicentre of the earthquake was 80 kilometres east of Wiwak, Papua New Guinea, at a depth of 44 kilometres.

The quake did not pose a tsunami threat to Malaysia, it added.
