Street hawking: 215 summonses issued from Dec 13- 31

KUALA LUMPUR, Jan 3 — A total of 215 summonses and 137 advocacy measures were taken against street hawking in a special operation to curb the activity nationwide from Dec 13 to 31 last year.

Bukit Aman Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department (JSPT) deputy director Datuk Mohd Nadzri Hussain said the action of these hawkers who ply their goods at traffic light junctions and the like was an offence under section 10A (1) LN 166/59 of the Road Traffic Regulations.

“It states that no sales transactions are allowed at road junctions or on any road. Such selling of pickled mangoes and other foodstuff or drinks if not controlled can pose accident risks to the hawkers themselves and road users,” he said in a statement here today.

Mohd Nadzri urged those responsible for such hawking and the hawkers involved to immediately to cease the activity.

“JSPT is committed to operations like this so that this regulation is not flouted. Offenders are liable to be fined not exceeding RM2,000 or jailed not more than six months, if convicted,” he said.
