Some 50,000 taxpayers expected to participate in Voluntary Tax Disclosure Programme

KUALA LUMPUR, Feb 27 (Bernama) — Some 50,000 new and existing taxpayers with a total assessment of RM1 billion are expected to participate in the Inland Revenue Board (IRB) Special Voluntary Disclosure Programme (PKPS) beginning June 1, 2023 until May 2024.

Deputy Finance Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said the programme, which was first implemented in 2019, will be re-introduced to encourage taxpayers to voluntarily file their income statements without being penalised or at a zero per cent rate.

“The number and estimated income are based on the introduction of the Tax Identification Number (TIN – tax identification number), which is registered to citizens aged 18 years and above,” he told a press conference at Parliament House here today.

Ahmad said the implementation of the programme, with the cooperation of the Royal Customs Department and in line with Budget 2023 tabled by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim last Friday, was to encourage the public to perform their responsibility as honest, trustworthy and transparent taxpayers.

He said the IRB through the Awareness, Education and Services or A.E.S. will assist taxpayers in carrying out their responsibilities.

He also gave assurance that the IRB will continue to provide professional taxation services in line with the aspiration to make voluntary tax compliance an output of all strategies and initiatives implemented.

As such, he called on all Malaysians to take the opportunity to come forward to update their respective tax compliance status and not to wait until the last minute.

He said this was to prevent taxpayers from missing out on this best opportunity because enforcement activities such as audits and investigations would go on as usual
