Six Encroachment Cases in Taman Negara Terengganu since 2019

KUALA BERANG, Six encroachment cases involving both foreigners and locals have been recorded at Taman Negara Terengganu since 2019.

Taman Negara Terengganu Superintendent Sharena Sapri said these cases involved the arrest of 13 individuals, including Cambodian and Vietnamese nationals.

She said the most recent case involved a 60-year-old Cambodian who was arrested earlier this year and sentenced to four years in prison under the Terengganu National Park Enactment 1939.

“Eight of the arrests involved foreigners, while five were locals. The most recent case involved a Cambodian national who is believed to have been operating in the park for about a month.

“It is likely that these foreign nationals entered the country as tourists and trespassed into the national park to hunt wildlife and collect agarwood, which is highly valuable in the market,” she said during an interview at the national park.

Enforcement and monitoring duties across the 1,030.8-square-kilometre park are carried out by 18 personnel of the
Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan), with the support of 42 community rangers.
