KUCHING, Sarawak’s Silambam squad is not only aiming to secure at least two gold medals at the 2024 Malaysia Games (SUKMA), but they also aspire to showcase the state’s rich ethnic diversity through this traditional Indian martial art.

Sarawak Silambam Association patron, Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah, said the Sarawak Silambam team will feature 18 exponents from various ethnic backgrounds within the state.

‘Come competition day, we’ll see the difference and uniqueness of our Silambam athletes compared to those from other states,’ she told reporters after an athlete visit programme at the Hikmah Exchange here today.

The Hikmah Exchange will host the Silambam events for SUKMA 2024 from Aug 20 to 22, with 14 gold medals up for grabs.

Fatimah, who is also State Women, Children and Community Wellbeing Minister, said the last time Silambam was featured in the biennial games was in 2013.

‘Silambam represents not just a sport but also the harmony and unity of Sarawak. When it comes to sport, we come together. We
come together to give our best,’ she added.
