malaysiangKIULU, Sabah Tourism Board (STB) chairman Datuk Joniston Bangkuai has encouraged local youth to take advantage of the growing business and employment opportunities in rural tourism in the state.
Citing Kiulu, located 40 kilometres north of Kota Kinabalu, as an example, Joniston highlighted the creation of 400 full-time and part-time jobs following the establishment of over 80 tourism-related businesses in the area.
The Kiulu Assemblyman noted that the area has become a popular destination for tourists and international students, particularly for summer camps, and he encouraged local educational institutions and students to consider it for team-building and personal development activities
‘Active participation in tourism would contribute to long-term prosperity for rural communities,’ he said in a statement after closing the Holistic Service Experience Programme at Riverbug Base Camp and the Adventure Centre here today.
Also present was North Borneo University College vice-chancellor Prof Datuk Dr Azimudd
in Bahari.
Organised by North Borneo University College, the programme aims to equip students with practical skills and leadership training for the hospitality sector.
Meanwhile, Joniston urged students to apply the skills they have learned in tourism and hospitality studies by venturing into the industry.
‘Make full use of the knowledge you have gained in tourism and hospitality by exploring business opportunities in the sector,’ said Joniston, who is also Sabah Tourism, Culture and Environment assistant minister.
