Red tide still up in Surigao Sur, Norte towns: BFAR-13

BUTUAN: Residents are still being warned about the presence of deadly red tide in the coastal waters of Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur and San Bento in Siargao Island, Surigao del Norte.

‘Shellfishes collected and tested from coastal waters of Lianga Bay in Surigao del Sur and San Benito in Surigao del Norte are still positive for Paralytic Shellfish Poison (PSP) or toxic red tide that is beyond the regulatory limit,’ the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR) said in Shellfish Bulletin No. 3 issued Tuesday.

The BFAR bulletin said all shellfish and Acetes sp. or alamang gathered from the two areas are not safe for human consumption.

It added that fish, squids, shrimps and crabs are safe for consumption as long as they are fresh, washed thoroughly and internal organs, such as gills and intestines, are removed prior to cooking.

The provincial government also sent warnings to the concerned local government units along Lianga Bay based on the latest BFAR bulletin.
