KUALA LUMPUR: Proton Holdings Bhd reported sales of 12,799 units for domestic and export markets in October, marking a 13.6 percent increase compared to the previous month’s 11,269 units. This surge in sales has elevated the company’s year-to-date (YTD) sales volume to 125,557 units.
According to BERNAMA News Agency, the national carmaker continues to hold the position as the second most popular brand in Malaysia’s automotive sales rankings. It reported an estimated market share of 18.1 percent for October and a YTD share of 18.9 percent for 2024. The total industry sales witnessed a rebound in October after experiencing a dip in the previous month.
The statement from Proton highlighted that original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) have contributed to this growth by introducing year-end sales offers. Total industry volume (TIV) is estimated to have reached 70,668 units in October, marking the fifth occurrence this year where monthly sales surpassed 70,000 units. The industry is on course to set a new record
by the end of the year.
Proton Edar CEO, Roslan Abdullah, stated that the final quarter of 2024 presents a challenging environment for automotive players due to the influx of new brands and products and aggressive sales targets encouraging various buyer incentives. He also mentioned that the company is laying the groundwork to establish a significant presence in the electric vehicle (EV) market, with the Proton e.MAS 7 set for a grand launch in December, backed by 36 dealers.
In terms of specific models, the Proton X50 maintained its lead in the B-segment SUV market with 2,122 units delivered in October, despite facing intensified competition from recent model launches. Sales of the Proton S70 also rebounded after a decline in September, with 1,432 units sold in October, ensuring it remains at the top of the C-segment sedan category and retains its YTD lead. Additionally, the Proton X70 recorded 989 units sold, and the Proton Iriz sold 379 units, holding its fourth-place position in the B-segment hatchback
market.
