Preserve Independence, Maintain Sovereignty And Peace – PM Anwar

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia’s independence, secured by its founding father and first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj, must always be preserved to ensure that the country remains independent and sovereign, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said.

He said as the citizen of the country, every Malaysian has an obligation to give meaning to the independence and freedom enjoyed over the past 67 years.

This is in line with the government’s aspiration to create a MADANI society that always respects each other, celebrates their diversity and helps one another to ensure that the everyone could live in peace and harmony.

‘In fact, this (obligation) is what was mentioned by the late Tunku Abdul Rahman in the proclamation of our independence 67 years ago, that our country must remain independent and sovereign and all its people peaceful, prosperous and safe forever.’

Anwar said this in his speech when opening the Commemoration of Statesman Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra Al-Haj at Bukit Jalil here today. His
speech text was read out by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof.

Also present were National Unity Minister Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang and his deputy K. Saraswathy, as well as Tunku Abdul Rahman’s grandson, Tunku Muinuddin Tunku Ahmad Nerang.

Anwar also described the Father of Malaysia’s Independence as a visionary and forward-thinking leader with strong determination and high confidence.

‘Internationally, he was also admired by friends and rivals, and had made Malaysia stand out in the eyes of the world. Tunku was the person responsible for establishing the Association of Southeast Asia (ASA) which was made up of Malaya, Thailand and the Philippines in 1961.

‘ASA later changed to ASEAN which is now made up of 10 countries, a proof that Tunku’s deeds and contributions not only benefit the people in his own country but are also appreciated by other countries in the region,’ said Anwar.
